Unit 2: 9 July 2024: Tutorial with Caroline Wright

Cyborg Sculpture prototype by Fine Artist Debbie New

I had a really productive one-to-one tutorial with Caroline Wright:

Reflections since last tutorial (if applicable):These are the things I keep returning to: The Periodic Table of Elements and their link to stardust. Gold (the element) which was forged in the hearts of dying stars. Geometric shapes as the building blocks of everything. Darwin’s Theory of evolution = Descent with modification meaning everything on earth could have been in myriad other permutations .
Overall feedback notes from tutorial discussion:The element of gold is a linking theme across paper works, paintings and sculptures. CW questioned whether the creatures (painting and sculpture) are in some sort of a staged setting, or whether they could be somehow staged in a way where they are not confined to the page – can they be less boundaried?
Action points arising from the tutorial:Whilst it is good that I am still risking and making somewhat intuitively and spontaneously, it would be useful to start considering audience as a factor to take into account when thinking about how the work’s message can be communicated. I discussed the idea of writing a booklet of poetry alongside the works in order to communicate more about my research. CW suggested that it might be more fruitful to think wider in terms of alternative communication methods outside of a book – for instance, if the audience is drawn into a room with the artworks, can the words be narrated as sound, or digitally animated across walls or artworks? In terms of the main theme of this work, the ‘backstory’ that is necessary for a viewer/user to be exposed to in order to access the wisdom/message, if that is to be a written work, it would be a lot of information to try to distill – if it is to be written, CW advised to sit down and write a rough draft and then to pack it away to allow it to ‘percolate’ for a few weeks before returning to it with eyes afresh. Think about whether the writing piece could be something less static such as moving image, film, a projection – something more ephemeral.I asked whether it is okay to be making work outside of what is strictly considered my practice-based research – CW confirmed that it is.
